It does not replace the principal’s own qualifying employment evidence.
Use each person’s records correctly
Family records may provide context without proving duties or employment. Qualifying L spouse work permission depends on appropriate actual status with required evidence, not the principal’s reconstructed calendar alone.
Separate the principal's qualifying-employment proof from each dependant's identity, relationship, status, and activity records. A spouse's passport may corroborate a trip, but it cannot establish where the principal worked, what duties were performed, or whether one continuous foreign year falls in the prior three. The petitioner must prove the active parent, branch, subsidiary, or affiliate relationship and a primarily managerial or executive U.S. role. It should also calculate the seven-year L-1A maximum; a new office starts with a one-year approval. Properly documented L-2 spouse status itself confers employment authorization, whereas children do not receive that work permission. The common error is using a family calendar as the principal employment ledger.
Hypothetical example: an Orford hospitality-group finance director travelled separately from her spouse, who kept a detailed household calendar. The employer should use her passport, corporate travel account, expense claims, payroll, and meeting records to rebuild her own locations. His notes can flag dates for investigation but should not override official records. If the petition succeeds and he obtains L-2 spouse status, his work authority arises from that status, not from the accuracy of her foreign-service calculation. Their child's schooling plan must likewise be kept apart from his permission to work.
