Read the general professional work overview
A North Hatley applicant should present the actual professional engagement consistently across documents issued by different organizations. The useful deliverable is a document map showing the claim, its issuer, the date and the record that independently confirms it. That map lets the applicant decide whether the existing file is ready for a Canadian admission request, whether an employer-filed I-129 is more suitable, or whether a missing credential or duty clarification should be resolved before either step.
Map who supplies each fact
Identify who can confirm employment terms and who can explain the project duties. Ask the responsible issuer to correct inaccuracies; do not rewrite its document or select incompatible extracts simply because they sound more favourable. A cancelled customer assignment needs a current factual replacement before it can support the proposed work. Read the employer letter beside the underlying engagement. The letter should state the employer, professional role, concrete duties, compensation, work location and temporary period; the contract, purchase order or customer statement should not contradict it. If the work has changed, obtain a current letter rather than trying to explain away an obsolete assignment at inspection. The decision is whether the evidence establishes one genuine professional engagement, not whether each item sounds favourable in isolation.
Attach the applicant’s independent qualifications
Show Canadian or Mexican citizenship and the listed profession’s specific qualifications for temporary TN activity. Education obtained outside Canada, Mexico or the US needs a reliable evaluation; a US practice licence is assessed separately. Explain relevant ownership because applicant-controlled US self-employment is prohibited, without treating every foreign business interest as disqualifying. Hypothetical example: a North Hatley wildlife-acoustics analyst is offered a six-month assignment by a U.S. environmental consulting firm to interpret bird-call recordings for a wind-farm study. Her first letter calls her a “field technician” even though she will analyse data, build detection models and report results under the firm’s biologist. She must decide whether the job is actually support work under Scientific Technician/Technologist or a different listed profession supported by her credential. The record that settles it is the detailed duty statement plus her transcript, training record and the biologist’s confirmation of supervision. If the firm expects her to work independently as the project’s lead biologist, relabelling the job will not solve the mismatch. Before travel, she should obtain a corrected letter identifying the supervising professional, the methods she applies, the project end date and the firm as employer, then compare those facts with the exact qualification branch she plans to claim.
Write the consulting letter as a project, not a job
Hypothetical example: a North Hatley operations consultant with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering is asked by a New Hampshire wood-pellet manufacturer to fix its inventory and scheduling problems. The first draft offers her the post of “operations manager” indefinitely. Under the Management Consultant listing that draft is the wrong document: TN management consulting is advisory work to improve a business, not a permanent line role running it. The letter must define the engagement as a project with a scope, deliverables such as a redesigned scheduling process and staff training, an end date, and the client’s own managers implementing the advice. It must also come from the U.S. entity, or from her Québec consultancy as employer if she remains its employee, and confirm she holds no ownership in the manufacturer, since self-employment inside the United States is prohibited. Her degree satisfies the education branch; without one, the alternative is either five years as a management consultant established by a statement or professional credential, or five years in a specialty related to the consulting agreement. Once the letter reads as a project, she may present it at the port of entry as a Canadian citizen, with renewals while the engagement remains temporary.
