Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Identify the work and the employer
TN is for temporary activity in a listed USMCA profession by a Canadian or Mexican citizen meeting that profession’s specific qualifications. Canadian permanent residence is insufficient. A staffing arrangement does not eliminate the need to establish the actual professional engagement. Experience cannot universally replace the prescribed education. The first decision is classification, not document volume. Compare the day-to-day duties with the wording of the chosen listing, then identify the record that proves each qualification: a diploma and transcript, a licence, or dated experience evidence where that listing permits experience. A polished résumé cannot cure a letter describing a different occupation. If the recipient of the work is a customer, retain the contract or work order that explains why the assignment exists and who directs it.
Separate credentials, ownership and admission
A degree earned outside Canada, Mexico or the United States needs a reliable foreign-credential evaluation; any US practice licence is a separate issue. Providing services to a US entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant is prohibited TN self-employment; ownership of a foreign business alone is not the same rule. Canadian citizens generally may apply for TN admission at a port of entry without a visa, or an eligible U.S. employer may file Form I-129 with USCIS; Mexican citizens generally require a TN visa before seeking admission. For a Canadian citizen, the usual initial request is made to a CBP officer when seeking admission; an employer may instead submit an I-129 petition to USCIS for an extension or change of employer. Choose the sequence before travel, because a start date, an expired credential, or an employer change can make the border presentation premature. TN does not allow the applicant to perform the professional work for a U.S. business the applicant owns or controls. A minority interest can still require a careful control analysis rather than a casual omission.
Check the exact listing for the proposed profession
Biologist appears in Appendix 2 of the USMCA professionals chapter with a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree as the qualifying credential. The listing sets out specific professions with specific credential requirements, and several of them accept defined alternatives to a baccalaureate. Determine the listed credential path and the issuing institution’s location before deciding the evaluation scope. Start with the current institution's registrar and ask directly which predecessor institutions it absorbed and which years of student records it holds. A licence satisfying a TN credential alternative does not necessarily permit practice in another jurisdiction. Before choosing a procedure, isolate the proposed period of work, the named U.S. recipient, and the reason a listed profession rather than a sales title matches the deliverables. If the answer is engineering assessments, design reviews, laboratory analysis or advisory reports, that is the duty description the file needs. Canadians may present the case at a port of entry or preclearance, or the employer may file an I-129, and no visa stamp is needed.
