Your talent.A bigger stage.

Hypothetical example: A Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley professional may hold a diploma under a former legal name. TN preparation should connect identity and qualifications through genuine records without treating a name change as either an automatic problem or a reason to alter the credential. A first review can make a short identity-and-role matrix: passport citizenship, each name appearing on the diploma or transcript, the USMCA profession selected, and the proposed employer. That matrix identifies whether the immediate decision is to obtain a corrected employer letter, obtain a name-change record, or choose a different classification; it does not treat a polished résumé as proof of any of those facts.

Start with the TN eligibility and application overview

01

Link the person to the qualification

The listed USMCA profession determines the particular qualifications for temporary TN work by Canadian or Mexican citizens. A consistent identity chain helps show whose credential is being offered; it does not turn an unrelated qualification into the required one. Experience is not a universal substitute for education. Foreign degrees from outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable evaluation, while a US practice licence is a separate assessment. Hypothetical example: a Québec geologist joins a Vermont environmental-testing company to interpret groundwater samples and prepare technical findings under that company’s supervision. Her university diploma bears her birth name, while her passport bears her married name. The marriage certificate, diploma, transcript and employer letter settle the identity issue when they all point to the same person. The more important decision is whether the letter describes geologist duties supported by her degree, rather than laboratory work that another category would have to justify. If the company instead asks her to run a U.S. firm she owns, TN cannot be used to operate that enterprise; the employment relationship must remain genuine.

02

Establish the current engagement

Use the actual duties, employer, pay and intended duration. Canadian permanent residence alone does not meet TN citizenship. Services to a US business solely owned or controlled by the applicant constitute prohibited self-employment; an interest in a foreign business alone is not a blanket exclusion. Canadian citizens generally may apply for TN admission at a port of entry without a visa, or an eligible U.S. employer may file Form I-129 with USCIS; Mexican citizens generally require a TN visa before seeking admission. Put the letter, credential records and proof of citizenship in that order before deciding when travel is practical. The employer’s signed letter should identify the job, professional duties, compensation, temporary period and who directs the work; a job title by itself settles little. A Canadian citizen normally requests TN admission without first obtaining a visa, whereas a Mexican citizen needs the visa process. A U.S. employer may use an I-129 petition in appropriate circumstances, but a petition does not repair a mismatch between duties and the chosen profession. The applicant should not resign or begin paid U.S. work until the applicable authorization is in place.

03

Confirm citizenship, the employer and the entry route

Once the real duties are documented, compare them with the profession being claimed and with the credential that listing accepts, since requirements differ by profession and some listings include experience-based alternatives while others do not. Engineer appears in Appendix 2 with its own qualification: a baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial licence. Ask whether an evaluation is needed after the profession and the institution’s authentic award records have been identified. Several enumerated professions name recognized professional credentials as an alternative to a degree, so the first step is to read the entry that applies and confirm which route the file will rest on. For a Canadian citizen, one procedure is to request classification at a U.S. inspection location or a preclearance facility; the employer may alternatively request Form I-129 approval from USCIS.
